Sacramento Spinal Cord Injury Attorney

Spinal cord injuries are usually caused by an abrupt, traumatic blow to the spine that may or may not fracture surrounding vertebrae. The consequences of spinal cord injuries can be physically and emotionally crippling, and financially devastating. Because spinal cord injuries are irreversible, long-term care may be necessary for the rest of the victim’s life. Care costs may exceed millions of dollars over the victim’s lifetime, and family members may need to take time away from work to care for a catastrophically injured loved one. After an injury, an attorney can help you recover the compensation you need to live comfortably and receive the medical care you will need for the rest of your life.

Estey & Bomberger spinal cord injury lawyers have more than 70 years of collective experience in California representing the seriously and catastrophically injured. We have helped numerous spinal cord injury and brain injury victims recover damages from the parties responsible for their catastrophic injuries. To see that our clients receive proper medical treatment and ensure that they receive maximum compensation, we consult with numerous medical and neurological expert witnesses in spinal cord injury cases. Compensation obtained in a verdict or settlement can help your family with physical, emotional, mental, and financial recovery.

Causes of Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries affect about 11,000 people each year in the United States, with about 400,000 people living with spinal cord injuries. The Mayo Clinic estimates that almost half of all new spinal cord injuries each year result from auto accidents and motorcycle accidents. Approximately 22% of spinal cord injuries result from falls, 15% result from violent acts (including gunshot and stabbing wounds), and 8 % result form impact sports and diving injuries. A small percentage of spinal cord injuries are caused by medical conditions, including arthritis, infections, inflammation of the spinal cord, and cancer.

Effects of Spinal Cord Injuries

Depending on the severity and location of an injury, the effects of an injury may be profound. Some of the permanent and long-term effects of spinal cord injuries include:

  • Abnormal increases in blood pressure (autonomic dysreflexia)
  • Bone degeneration
  • Changes in sexual function, sexual sensitivity and fertility
  • Difficulty breathing, coughing or clearing secretions from your lungs
  • Exaggerated reflex activities
  • Gallbladder and renal stones
  • Loss of ability to regulate body temperature
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Loss of movement
  • Loss of sensation
  • Pain or an intense stinging sensation
  • Spasms.

Complete and Incomplete Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries are classified as either complete or incomplete. Incomplete spinal cord injuries are sometimes called partial spinal cord injuries. With a complete spinal cord injury, the victim has no sensation or voluntary movement ability on both sides of the body below the point of injury. With a partial or incomplete injury, the victim has some function and feeling, which may be very limited, below the point of injury. One side of the body may be more affected than the other. Spinal cord injuries resulting in partial or full paralysis are usually described using the following terms:

Paraparesis: Slight or partial paralysis affecting the lower extremities (legs).

Paraplegia: Complete paralysis of the legs and usually the lower trunk. The upper extremities are not affected.

Quadriparesis: Partial paralysis of arms and legs.

Quadriplegia (or Tetraplegia): Complete paralysis of both arms and both legs.
